Hoffmann kiln is a main fire passage that is flanked by several small rooms on either side. There is a pallet of bricks in each hall. There is a fire wagon in the main fire road, which carries a constantly burning fire. For a specific time, that room is fired until the bricks are fully vitrified and the fire wagon is then moved into the next space to be shot.
A passageway containing warm gasses from the flame links each room to the next room. The hottest gasses are thus guided into the space being shot at the time. Then the gases move into the adjacent room to be shot first. The brick is preheated by the gasses there. As the gasses pass through the circuit of the kiln, they cool gradually as they transfer heat to the brick as it is preheated and dried. In addition to the inner opening to the fire path, each space also has an external door through which freshly fired bricks are removed and replaced with wet bricks to be dry and then fired in the next firing process.
